The original Galaxy Buds, launched in 2019, were true wireless earbuds, but they were also truly disappointing, with substandard sound quality and limited features putting many off – ourselves included.
I tried these Samsung Galaxy buds plus, a very good package except for sound which was also nothing special in my opinion. The Samsung Galaxy Buds are just one of the many models that sought to topple the Apple AirPods' monopoly on the true wireless earbuds market. The wait kept going all the way until last month when Samsung unveiled its Galaxy Buds alongside the Galaxy S10 and Galaxy Fold reveal. Once in place, the Galaxy Buds Plus do a good job. There’s also an option to add an extra level of ambient sound. Tapping and holding your finger on one of the pads activates your voice assistant of choice, Siri or Google Assistant. Another feature missing from the Galaxy Buds+ headphones is the ability to pause music automatically every time you remove an earbud. Battery life is a strength for the Galaxy Buds, which marks a major upgrade from the company’s first true wireless effort, the Gear Icon earphones that lasted a feeble 1.5 hours. Given these downsides, is there anything to salvage the Galaxy Buds for a person not already in the Samsung ecosystem? The Galaxy Buds are the most forgettable true wireless earbuds I’ve yet tried. There’s a slight hint of hardness, but you couldn’t classify it as harsh or bright. It’s actually a mixture of dynamic flaws, sloppy timing and a lack of detail. My colleagues Dan Seifert and Dieter Bohn have also experienced this latter type of connection flakiness on other sets of Buds, including when they are connected to a shiny new Galaxy S10.
