To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Through the three sections--Ballads, Social Music (mostly instrumentals), and Songs (kind of like ballads, but less story-oriented), this collection not only contains some great, timeless music and performances, it's also steeped in pure humanity--the real essence of true folk music. While these 1960s folk songs continue to resonate today, new artists have added their fingerprints to the sound.
Those very familiar with Bob Dylan's work will find that, though so far as I remember Dylan never strictly speaking covered any of these songs, yet song after song resonates with and probably influenced Dylan's work, especially in the pre-Nashville Skyline albums. As is usefully noted in the Smithsonian's accompanying booklet, song after song was covered or adapted by famous folk and rock artists. The World Music Festival in general is a great event to offer because it exposes people not only to the music of other cultures but also to the stories behind the songs that are performed. I’m grateful that the Old Town School of Folk Music was a partner to that festival and hosted such a quality event. This set captures the beginning of electronically assisted recording in 84 tracks spanning a the wide range of American folk from Hawaiian guitar to Jug Bands and original blues.

Reviews of CDs, live performances and folk music related literature . Some of the songs will have a familiar feel (Jerry Garcia learned how to play every solo on this album and Bob Dylan lifted a few lyrics from the songs here) but many sound like they come straight out of the swamp. This anthology is arguably, I would say undoubtedly, the most influential musical recording ever issued. When I first played it, I thought there were only half as many recordings as there really were, which accounts for some of my initial disappointment. There is very little melody; words don't rhyme; there is no immediate sense of musicianship or skill. This is a very good historical addition to our music collection of all genres.
