This is Manon's first time away from home, and she's clearly excited by all the hubbub as she walks through the crowd with Lescaut. During her journey, she falls for a well-meaning young man of modest means, who adores her.

Massenet breaks the somber mood again by introducing a lively ballet, which Guillot has arranged especially to impress Manon. The story, originally part of a long novel by the Abbe Prevost, concerns a young woman torn between true love and the lure of luxury.
