Originally named Warsaw, the band consisted of Ian Curtis (vocals and occasional guitar), Bernard Sumner (guitar and keyboards), Peter Hook (bass guitar and backing vocals) and Stephen Morris (drums and percussion). But where Curtis -- the lead singer and songwriter of Joy Division, the band that begot New Order -- often came across as gloomy and despondent in his lyrics, Sumner deals mostly in a bittersweet, thoughtful melancholy: "On a thousand islands in the sea/I see a thousand people just like me/A hundred unions in the snow/I watch them walking, falling in a row/We live always underground/It's going to be so quiet in here tonight/A thousand islands in the sea/It's a shame/And a hundred years ago/A sailor trod this ground I stood upon/Take me away everyone/When it hurts thou.". And while much of the gloom of Joy Division was exacerbated by Curtis' vocal style, a singular baritone bark, Sumner's boyish tenor lends itself to a sadness a few steps removed from that of Curtis.
