While not extraordinary on paper, Laid-Back Camp is one of the most inspired takes on the popular premise of a group of teenagers focusing on a specific activity. — PH. In Hinamatsuri, anything goes. The series follows four friends who work office jobs, and also happen to be otakus, as they fall in love with each other while hiding their pop culture geekiness from their colleagues.

Once a young athletic prodigy, first year Kakeru Kurahara finds himself in deep trouble until he’s saved by a fellow university student in charge of a dormitory. What he may never realize is that his subject of affection Takagi doesn’t only share those feelings, but is also always prepared to make his plans collapse on themselves. To sum things up, Fukumoto is a manga artist best known for his series about gambling -- a theme he uses to explore the psyche of his characters, to criticize the dog-eat-dog capitalist landscape, and to have some unbelievably exciting confrontations. This season has some of the best villains, fight sequences and action of the entire series, and My Hero Academia season 3 still stands out both within the Spring and Summer seasons as a must-see. In a medieval fantasy land torn apart by human in-fighting and a demonic menace, the young Theo gets sidetracked from his goal to liberate his hometown to a grand quest to save the whole continent. Rascal Does Not Dream of Bunny Girl Senpai had to work hard to earn the positive reception it’s gotten. A bulk of the anime shows that focus on young love between two girls aren’t written with nuance — most settle for thin fanservice or endings where the girls straight-up don’t even end up together. What could have been one of the most disingenuous product placement series ended up being... a very soulful product placement series. The story revolves around two girls, Ayano Hanasaki, a first-year student and badminton prodigy who has no desire to play, and Nagisa Aragaki, a third-year aiming to become the best player in Japan. With just the right amount of exaggeration, Mitsuboshi Colors escalates their childlike behavior and ridiculous conversations in hilarious ways, and becomes even funnier when the adults jump in on their ridiculous game. Despite technically being a 3-D, CG production, at any point it may switch to intentionally hideous 2-D animation, gorgeous hand-drawn art, pixelated game parodies made by a university student, or an arts-and-craft stop-motion spectacle. Giorno Giovanna offers a fresh POV as the protagonist in the fifth adaptation of Jojo; he’s the son of the iconic villain Dio on a quest to become a benevolent mobster like those who left a strong impression on him as a child. The club members are an unlikely trio: there’s Olivia, a student with foreign parents who was raised in Japan but pretends to be an American exchange student; Hanako, a wealthy girl with a drive to become popular; and Kasumi, who looks bookish but is radically failing English. A Fashionable Judo Girl — timed to the 1992 Barcelona Olympics where women could compete in judo at the Olympic level and earn a medal for the first time — have been depicting strong women in sports for years. Classic SAO characters like Kirito and Asuna are foregone in favor of protagonist Karen Kohiruimaki, a college student fixated on her abnormal height. — PH. Based off of the 1980s shōjo manga series written by Akimi Yoshida, Banana Fish is set on the streets of modern New York City. What does it focus on, then? But at its heart this season of JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure, subtitled Golden Wind, is something a little more familiar: a crime story. Frankly, it makes no financial sense for anyone to fund an adaptation of a spin-off from a niche title that last made it to TV screens in 2011, and it makes even less sense to recommend it to a western audience, considering that the works of Nobuyuki Fukumoto never seemed to get the dedicated following they got in Japan.
