Why shouldn’t the lead protagonist be a young black woman? From the perfectly circular hole in the ocean — an absolute nightmare trigger of evocative imagery — to the creature’s vaguely human physique, Sweetheart tees up a world of mysteries you’ll want to explore, preferably with a giant monster-hunting weapon in hand. Subplot involving opiate addiction was never resolved. If you take it seriously, you won't enjoy it, but it's the perfect movie to watch when you can't decide between a comedy and a suspenseful movie. Also, she was in several episodes of the Netflix series Easy and the sci-fi series Extant with Halle Berry. Also gives purpose to meaning, always be aware of new people you bring into your childrens lives.
The cast is quite watchable.
The film loses a little bit of that raw power when the third act brings some new survivors to the island, and while those themes drive home the resonant thematic message (if you’re wondering why in god’s name anyone would name a monster movie Sweetheart, I assure you there’s a satisfying reason) there’s no denying they’re less engrossing to watch. For the record, I absolutely adored Kiersey Clemons’ reaction face when she first sees the monster. Then sleep like a log, while he creeps around your sleeping young daughters. A very predictable movie with a simple plot.Not any different from many others of the same type. Sweetheart doles out just enough mystery to keep the creature (and Jenn) intriguing and ultimately ratchets up to a highly satisfying confrontation between woman and beast.
TRY 30 DAYS FREE. Sweetheart does this with a confident sense of self-awareness. Pretty idiotic Lifetime type movie except the final knife scene only lasted two minutes.
That becomes crucial as the film’s deeper themes start to connect, but in the near-dialogue-free first act, it’s an absolutely refreshing portrayal of a woman in peril.
It’s no secret that we really enjoy when we get to see female protagonists in genre movies.
