Elaine Welteroth is truly an inspiration for so many reasons, and getting to read her story in her beautifully written words- I am thankful for the experience. Green lawns, four-bedroom ranch-style homes, and a flagpole that kids pledge allegiance to every day in public school. I bought this book because I live in the same small city that Elaine grew up in, I was curious to read what she had to say about it and love hearing about familiar settings. She even says in the book that people are often interested in the results and the firsts, but now the hustle it takes to get there. She is a self-professed down-home, southern girl at heart—and she has the cooking chops to prove it—but during the school year, she was raised fifteen hundred miles north in Rochester, New York's bustling, blue-collar city life with her two brothers, Tyrone and Tyson. Elaine's journey has been incredibly inspiring and motivational. I really liked this book.
Wow, this book. I ended up reading every word. She has written for the hit show Grown-ish and has appeared on-camera for a range of media outlets including ABC News and Netflix. Her rise to Editor-In-Chief of Vogue is extraordinary. I highly recommend for women who are in all stages of their careers regardless of industry. Elaine Welteroth covers so much ground. Her stories of race and not fitting in were definitely something that I could relate to on a personal note. It’s so on point with my childhood, my 20’s and where I’m in my career right now. She even mentions that the quote “there is no glory in a grind that grinds you down” was very life changing for her, but does not explore what this meant in her life. I have no words and so many words about why I loved this book so much.
