Glowing radio and newspaper reports transformed these "public enemies" into celebrities - much like the cinema gangsters of the time.
With the Gilded Age in full swing and the Industrial Revolution reshaping the American landscape, "the Kid", who was gunned down by Sheriff Pat Garrett in the New Mexico Territory at the age of 21, became a new breed of celebrity outlaw.
Seven months later, after joining a party of pioneers led by George Donner, they reached the Sierra Nevada Mountains as the first heavy snows of the season closed the pass ahead of them.

The truth of the ambush and the aftermath of their death also holds many unexpected surprises.
Rob Shapiro, By: The criminals of the Depression robbed almost at will, as the Indiana State Police had only 41 members, including clerks and typists.
The book is definitely good enough to get past this, and I still extremely enjoyed the author’s in-depth look at this thrilling infamous story.
Decades after Richard Ramirez left 13 dead and paralyzed the city of Los Angeles, his name is still synonymous with fear, torture, and sadistic murder.

At first, I thought I could be the understanding listener, and "get past it" - but after the first half-dozen hours, it just wears you down!
Michael Prichard, What the Investigation Missed - and Why It Still Matters, By: On the afternoon of October 26, 1881, nine men clashed in what would be known as the most famous shootout in American frontier history.
However, every single second of free time I was able to muster up, went to this great listen.

In 1933, during their infamous run from the law, Bonnie and Clyde were joined by Clyde's brother Buck Barrow and his wife Blanche.
Bonnie comes across as an adoring girlfriend rather than the hardened criminal portrayed in story and staged photographs. Highly recommended!

Enjoyed all the details. Rising from humble Brooklyn roots, Capone went on to become the most infamous gangster in American history. But they did not act alone. By: Please try again. He has some kind of strange lisp or slur.
Grover Gardner, Narrated by: Having grown up in that area, it was interesting to hear about the Bonnie & Clyde era (which pre-dated me by a number of years - but my parents/grandparents might have known some of these people!) Working with unprecedented access to government documents, a voluminous correspondence with Terry Nichols, and more than 150 interviews with those immediately involved, Gumbel and Charles demonstrate how much was missed in the official investigation.

Soon, from the Rockies to West Virginia, like Ted Bundy, Luther enticed a chain of women into his murderous trap. Dillinger's daring escapes at Crown Point jail or through the withering machine gun fire of FBI agents at Little Bohemia Lodge, along with his countless bank robberies, excited the imagination of a despondent country.
It is a well written factual telling of the story, without being overwrought or apologizing for the actions of the Barrows. In fact, after listening to it, I had to go back and make sure I actually heard what I heard. Hard to believe that they actually didn't die much sooner.
I particularly appreciated the added historical customs, etiquette, and other information that we would not be aware of today, for example, the importance of Bonnie’s cigar, the consequences of life in the depression, and the way the law was carried out at the time.
It was almost like the reader bit his tongue (had tongue surgery?)
